D-DOT SERVICE PROBLEMS BACK IN THE DAY [Video-1]
During the 70's and 80's the Detroit Department of Transportation (D-DOT) would
experience numerous problems that would affect service. (The first in a series)
Although D-DOT bus service has improved tremendously in recent years, things have not always been rosy.
Over the years the city's transit agency would encounter numerous obstacles and would struggle to maintain
adequate service. DDOT's first round of service problems occurred during the Winter of 1977-78, which was
compounded by a major snowstorm that dumped 19-inches of snow on the city in late January 1978, and
would take the department months to recover. In this video clip from February, 1978, WJBK-TV2 Eyewitness
News takes a look at some of the problems facing bus riders in Detroit.

THE "RTS-II" COACH ARRIVED IN DETROIT 30-YEARS AGO
June 26, 2008, marked thirty years of the RTS (Rapid Transit Series) Advanced Design
Bus operating along the streets of Detroit.
In early 1978, the Detroit Department of Transportation (D-DOT) surveyed its riders to gather their opinions
regarding the quality of the city's bus service. Unfortunately, the survey results were not good. However, DDOT
management  took advantage of an opportunity to release the results of its survey to coincide with the
launching of its new fleet of GMC "RTS-II" coaches. During a press conference held at the west-side Coolidge
Terminal, on Friday, June 23, 1978, the department unveiled its new bus fleet to the media. The department
had anticipated that the new RTS fleet would drastically improve the quality of DDOT bus service.
Our video contains clips from three local newscasts
(WJBK-TV2, WWJ-TV4 (now WDIV) and WXYZ-TV7) that
covered the media event back in 1978.
GMC's first newly designed transit bus since 1959 began service in Detroit on Monday, June 26, 1978.
