| Around 1955, the DSR opened its new redesigned bus shelter and waiting station in Capitol Park. This photo shows two Grand River trolley-coaches laying-over northbound on Shelby, north of State St. in Capitol Park. The two coaches can be seen sporting both the old and new DSR color schemes. | In this 1961 photo, Grand River (St. Louis Car Co) trolley-coach #9152 is seen here shortly after leaving Capitol Park, heading westbound on Clifford St. @ Bagley. For years the Grand River line left Capitol Park via north on Griswold, west on Clifford, south on Middle, to west on Grand River. [photo courtesy of Tom's Trolley Bus Pix-Detroit, MI] |
| Toward the end of their service lives a number of the St. Louis trolley-coaches were repainted in a new livery. Coach #9136 is seen here sporting the cream with green trimming color scheme, first introduced by the DSR on the GM "old-looks" delivered in 1956. | In this photo, coach #9173 can be seen traveling eastbound on Grand River, between Seven and Six Mile Roads. Beginning on March 11, 1956, the trolley-coach service hours were reduced -- operating only during weekday daytime hours. Sadly, after only eleven years of service, Grand River trolley-coach service came to an end on Friday, November 16, 1962. The cars were never sold to other properties, and most were scrapped. |
| Beginning in late October 1953, the DSR accepted delivery of its first twenty-five "high capacity" GM diesel buses - Model TDH-5105. Between November 1953, and the fall of 1957, a total of 355 of these air-suspension GM "old look" coaches (#1201-1555) were put into service. These 40-foot long, 51-passenger coaches were purchased primarily to replace the PCC streetcars on Jefferson, Michigan, Gratiot, and Woodward Avenues, but most of the small-size Fords, Transits, and Checker buses were also replaced. The first 130 (#1201-1330) arrived sporting the DSR's cream with red trim livery. The last of the TDH-5105's were retired in 1973. [photo courtesy of the Schramm Collection] |
